Golden vs Brown Flaxseed: What's the Difference?
If you’ve ever stood in front of the flaxseed shelf wondering whether you should choose golden flaxseed or brown flaxseed, you’re not alone. The short answer is that both golden and brown flaxseed can be nutritious additions to a balanced diet, and the best choice often comes down to taste, texture, appearance and how you plan to use it.
Both varieties are packed with health benefits and can be a simple addition to everyday meals. But while they look different, you might be wondering: Is there actually a difference between golden and brown flaxseed? Which one should I choose? And can I use them interchangeably?
At Waltanna, we grow and process both golden and brown flaxseed right here on our farm in South-West Victoria. So, let’s take a closer look at what makes them different.
What is flaxseed?
Flaxseed, also known as linseed, comes from the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum). It has been grown and used for thousands of years and is now widely enjoyed as a food ingredient.
Flaxseed is naturally a source of plant-based omega-3 fatty acid (ALA), fibre and protein. It also contains a range of naturally occurring vitamins, minerals and other plant compounds called lignans.
One of the great things about flaxseed is its versatility. Whole seeds can be added to breads, cereals and baking, while ground flaxseed can be incorporated into smoothies, porridge, yoghurt, muffins and many other recipes.
But what about the colour?
Golden vs brown flaxseed: the main difference
The most obvious difference is, of course, the colour.
Golden flaxseed has a light golden/yellow appearance, while brown flaxseed has a deeper brown or reddish/brown colour.
The colour comes from the natural characteristics of the different flax varieties. Just like different varieties of apples can have different colours and flavours, flaxseed varieties can also vary in appearance and subtle flavour characteristics.
In terms of everyday nutrition, both golden and brown flaxseed can contribute important nutrients to your diet.
Rather than thinking of one as being "better" than the other, it’s more useful to consider which variety suits your taste and the way you like to eat it.
Golden flaxseed
Golden flaxseed is particularly popular for its mild, nutty flavour and attractive golden colour.
Its lighter appearance makes it a great choice when you want to add flaxseed to food without significantly changing the appearance of your recipe.
At Waltanna Farms, our Certified Organic Golden Rolled Flaxseed is a unique product made using our own specialised processing method. Rather than simply grinding the seed, our process cracks the outer shell while helping preserve the oil-containing part of the seed. This gives you a convenient way to consume flaxseed as the gut microbiome easily breaks down the seed improving absorption of the nutrients in the flaxseed.
Our golden flaxseed is also available as Golden Flaxseed Meal and Golden Flaxseed Flour, giving you different options depending on your recipe.
Brown flaxseed
Brown flaxseed has a darker appearance and can have a slightly more pronounced, earthy or nutty flavour.
It is a traditional choice for many baking and bread recipes and works particularly well when you don't mind the deeper colour of the seed.
Brown flaxseed can be used in much the same ways as golden flaxseed.
At Waltanna Farms, our Certified Organic Brown Whole Flaxseed and Brown Flaxseed Meal provide options for customers who prefer the flavour and appearance of brown flaxseed.
Is golden flaxseed healthier than brown?
This is one of the most common questions we hear.
The answer isn't as simple as saying one is healthier than the other.
Both golden and brown flaxseed contain fibre, protein and plant-based omega-3 fatty acid (ALA), and both can form part of a balanced diet.
Nutritional composition can vary depending on the flax variety, growing conditions and processing, so broad claims that one colour is always nutritionally superior aren't particularly helpful.
Instead, choose the variety you enjoy and are most likely to use regularly.
After all, a nutritious food is most useful when it actually makes its way onto your plate!
Do they taste different?
There can be subtle differences in flavour.
Golden flaxseed is often described as having a milder, lighter and slightly nutty flavour, while brown flaxseed can have a more robust, earthy nuttiness.
However, flavour can vary between varieties and products, so the best way to find your favourite is to try both.
If you're new to flaxseed, golden flaxseed can be an easy place to start because of its mild flavour and versatile appearance.
If you enjoy a stronger wholegrain or nutty flavour, brown flaxseed may be the variety for you.
Can I substitute golden flaxseed for brown flaxseed?
Absolutely.
For most everyday recipes, golden and brown flaxseed can be used interchangeably.
If a recipe calls for brown flaxseed and you only have golden, there is generally no reason you can't make the swap. The biggest difference will usually be the colour and potentially a subtle change in flavour.
For example, golden flaxseed can be used in a loaf of bread when a recipe specifies brown flaxseed. Likewise, brown flaxseed can be added to muffins or crackers that call for golden flaxseed.
The result may look slightly different, but both varieties can work beautifully.
Golden or brown – which one is right for you?
Ultimately, there isn't a single answer.
If you like a mild, nutty flavour and golden appearance, golden flaxseed could be your go-to.
If you prefer a deeper colour and slightly more robust flavour, brown flaxseed could be the perfect choice.
Or, why choose just one?
Try both and see which one you prefer.
